Where We Began

Backpack Buddies Foundation of Loudoun was born in 2013 from members of the Rotary Club of Leesburg who recognized a growing need among children facing food insecurity in Loudoun County. They saw an opportunity to create a central fundraising and grant-writing organization that could support local programs already working to help students have the food they need on weekends and school breaks.

What began as a community-driven effort to help a small number of schools has grown into a countywide mission supporting programs across Loudoun County. Today, BBFL continues to carry that same Rotary-rooted spirit of service, partnership, and local impact.

Our Mission

Backpack Buddies Foundation of Loudoun is a 501(c)(3) fundraising and grant-writing organization committed to ensuring that no school-aged child in Loudoun County goes hungry on weekends or extended school breaks.

In Loudoun County, 1 in 5 school-aged children comes from a food-insecure home. That means when school is not in session, many children may not know where their next meal is coming from. For these students, weekends, holidays, and long breaks can create a serious gap in access to consistent, nourishing food.

BBFL exists to help close that gap. Through fundraising, grants, community partnerships, and donor support, we provide financial resources to local programs that help ensure children have the food they need when school meals are not available.

Our work is rooted in collaboration. We support the organizations, schools, civic groups, businesses, and community partners already serving children and families across Loudoun County. By acting as a centralized funding resource, BBFL helps strengthen and expand local efforts so more students can be reached.

Every donation, sponsorship, grant, and partnership helps provide stability for children who deserve to return to school nourished, supported, and ready to learn.

Because hunger should never stand between a child and their ability to grow, thrive, and succeed.
